Missouri, United States | website

Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Dense black beard, brilliant plumage, reverberating gobble--Old Tom is notorious for haunting the Ozark hills. He's a prize gobbler with the wisdom to stay just out of reach. Our handcrafted porter is also memorable, but it's one Old Tom that won't get away.

Deep, deep amber color. Nose is coffee and dark chocolate. Awesome flavor. The coffee and dark chocolate blend perfectly. Taste is full, yet remarkably smooth. No harshness. Very much like a high quality coffee.

Deep, dark brown color to the body; thick, dense, light tan head; patches of foam clinging to the glass. Lots of roasted grain and dark chocolate scent. Cocoa flavor dominates things; milk chocolate; twinge of hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; smooth and silky; a little watery overall; semi-dry finish.

A very satisfying porter overall that only falls (somewhat) short with a slightly thin body. Otherwise, it provides a rich, chocolaty and roasted grain flavor with just the right edge of powdery dryness.

16 oz can, as pictured. Award winning beer, it must be good (2013 GABF® Gold Medal Brown Porter).
Poured an opaque, jet black color with an inch high light brown head, soapy lace.
It smelled of roasted malt, some caramel.
Taste starts with roasted malt, some toffee-like sweetness, then charred bitterness to finish.
Hints of chocolate and coffee, but these are not the dominant flavors.
Light to medium bodied, dry finish. Smooth yet crisp.
This is a pretty good porter, obviously is bang on for the style.

A - Pours a dark chocolate with a slow to form 1 finger tan head. Very very good head retention and nice lacing

S - Aromas of roasted coffee beans and chocolate nice aroma but simple. Fairly sweet aroma

T - Excellent flavor. Mainly chocolate, coffee and a mild toffee. It does finish with a nice hint of smokiness. Well balanced. Sweet upfront with a bitter finish

M - Very fizzy and creamy in the mouth. Medium body with a slight burn.

O - A well done porter. Great flavor and easy drinking. Slight burn but an enjoyable one. I have had several of Piney's beers and they have all been very good so far. Nothing over the top but good sessionable beers

Pours to a thinnish beige head that persists and laces a bit and clear dark brown color similar to Dr Pepper. Aroma is full of black malt, chocolate malt, slightly fruity yeast esters and a touch of vanilla beans. Flavor is roasty, rich with malt character, and nicely balanced by earthy hops. Very much an English style with none of the American flavor signatures such as loud PNW hops or strong alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and CO2 is spot on for style. I really like this porter. I like it when US brewers can make authentic British ales without Yank-ifying them. It is nice to get them fresh and local as opposed to stale imports. I'm beginning to really appreciate Piney River. Glad we get their beers in South AR. I hope they distribute to OK if they don't already because that's where I'm moving next month.

Picked this up a Macadoodles in Jane, MO

Pours chestnut with 3 fingers of tan head. One of the least black porters I've seen in a while.
Average head retention & above average lacing

S: Roastyness & brown bread

T: Follows the nose, some chicory up front as well, a bit of dryness as well. Roastyness, along with a bit of black cherry, dryness from woody hops & dryness as this warms, just a hint iron lingers at the back of the throat. Finishes with coffee notes, roastyness, carob & dryness

Medium bodied, fairly creamy, thins out some as it warms

A soild, easy-drinking American Porter. All canned offerings from these guys have been on point. Give'em a try...

A - Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a one-finger,light brown head of foam. It left sudsy light brown lace on the glass.

S - It smelled roasty with some caramel and toffee notes.

T - It tasted of bitterness with a strong roasted malt character. Some toffee and caramel add some sweetness and balance.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a pretty nice porter. I really like what Piney Rive is making.
