I got a can of this beer from Gunny as part of my 2025 Fantasy Football League winnings! It poured a clear golden with white head that is leaving some lace. The scent had subtle bright citrus hop notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with crisp malt base with bright citrus presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

Hitting all the happy points of beer flavor, The Black Abbey hits home with a classic and traditional Midwestern-styled IPA with hints of Pacific Coast influences with a more traditional British inspired malt base.
The results hit all Five Points with the beer pouring a hazy and deep honey gold with an ivory tinted froth growing to the rim. As an elevated perfume of citrus, grasses and pine rise above a toasty malt scent, the first sip leans in with a blend of honey, caramel, bread crust and nuttiness in a very granola-like kind of way.
As the malts start to recede from the middle palate, the hops billow into a bright taste of pink grapefruit, orange peel and with more suggestive hints of apricot and pineapple. Part estery, the fruitiness is slightly marmalade-like as the hops continue to develop into a spicier, grassier and more herbal taste of fresh pine needles, peppery resins and lemongrass.
Medium bodied, drying and rather refreshing, the beer finishes on the dry and spicy side of balance with an extension of hop bitterness that outlasts the sweetness for a medium-long aftertaste.

Ale pours a dirty gold with a ample inch head, decent lacing. Good hop herbal aroma; very balanced malt/hop balance, finishes dry. More pale ale than IPA, but very good either way.
