(Appearance) Pours a creamy, frothed head of a caramel tan color over a copper-amber body with light haziness and light carbonation. Retention is above average and lacing is light and spotty. 3.5
(Smell) Biscuity, bready and lightly tangy rye malt body with a light sweetness, a fruity hop profile with a moderate bitterness. Clean and doughy, with a moderate potency. 3.5
(Taste) The flavor is largely similar to the aroma, with doughy bread and tangy rye with a light spiciness, a medium residual sweetness and a soft hop presence with delicate fruit undertones, and a modest bitterness. Finishes smooth, lightly viscous and clean. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly syrupy, chewy, medium dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, medium overall. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.5
(Overall) A pretty enjoyable Red Ale with a nice malt base, smooth and enjoyable. I found the hop profile lacking, however. 3.5

First had: on tap at Frog Level
Brownish-amber pour with a small off-white head that retained as a ringlet. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, toasted grains, light floral hops. On the palate, there was a huge blast of malty sweetness that I didn't expect, almost cloying, caramel and a dash of cocoa, toasted (and frosted) cereal, light floral hops in the background. This was way too sweet, and lacked the distinct rye profile of a rye beer as well as the clean hop bite of a pale ale. Almost like it was the end of the keg, and the heavier elements settled to the bottom. The body was on the heavier side of medium--again, a bit surprising--and sticky with malts. Maybe this was just an "off" pour, but I didn't really care for it.

I gotta admit the shape of the "croker" that is the growler of this beer caught my eye today at Bestway, another new brewery from here in NC,this from the far west of the state.Poured into a nonic a dull light to medium golden with a 1/2 finger white head that settles into a frothy mass atop.Lighter aromas with the lactic-like rye standing out most,a bit of floral hops are there but are pretty subdued.Crisp and lightly toasted on the palate, with light caramel/biscuit,the rye is there mainly in the back end,not a huge hop presence wich was a little suprising, the crispness makes it an easy drinker. Not bad but it's not gonna wow you,but for outdoor grilling or other activities where you want a quaffer this is it.
