In the tradition of a Belgian pale ale, Luella finishes dry but offers a perceived candy sweetness with aromas of grape and bread, spice from a late addition of Sterling hops, and a bit of Belgian funkiness to round it out.

It's the smell of this that is so horrible. I keep thinking of sulfurous hot springs and the smell of skyrockets drifting from the launch site.

Appearance is attractive, with a yellow brew topped with modest foam. It's actually sort of drinkable, and the Belgian yeast seems to be willing to work on sorghum, chestnuts, and lentils. It just doesn't taste like much but weak tea and maybe a touch of pineapple.

If there was just a category for these gluten-free beer-like concoctions, life would be more fair. As a beer made with "special" ingredients, it's interesting and not bad to drink. As a Belgian Pale Ale, it's a horror show.
