Fiddlehead Mellow Mike

Served from a growler into a clear Shaker pint glass. Purchased directly from the brewery at Fiddlehead Brewing Co. (Shelburne, VA).

A: Hazy light brownish-amber with soft beige 1-finger foamy head with decent retention and a thin line of lacing. (3.75)

S: Soft malty aromas dominate with an even balance of medium crystal and toasted maltiness with only a light touch of caramel sweetness. Hops component is not absent and brings orange citrus and mild pine to the aroma. No yeast esters or alcohol notes. (3.5)

T: Very malty with a great balance of complex soft caramel notes with toastiness. It treads the line between an American Amber Ale and an Irish Red Ale with the toastiness in there, but the citrus, floral and pine hoppiness really cut through a bit more and really kill any sweetness, just leaving layer after layer of smooth maltiness on the palate. Bitterness is mild. A truly delicious and understated amber ale. (4.25)

M: Fiddlehead does a stellar job on this component as well with a smooth creamy texture with even, lowish carbonation and a medium body despite the mid-range ABV. The dryness in the finish is exceptional -- just raises the drinkability of this already easy-drinking beer another notch. (4.5)

O: This is a very impressive beer from Fiddlehead -- sure to stay in their lineup due to the incredible drinkability and malt assault this brings, but with enough hoppiness to keep it from being too sweet. Mellow Mike provide soft maltiness with only slight sweetness and an interesting toasty malt character, clean hop notes, and a creamy body with exceptionally dry finish. Really a well-done beer and the Shelburne natives are sure to go after this one with abandon. (4.25)
