This is my first beer from Smog City, a brewery I've heard many good things about. They don't distribute to Mass, but thankfully I've got Tavour for that. I'm a sucker for hazelnut in a Stout, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one. Let's crack it open and see what it's all about
Pours a very dark brown with 2 fingers of creamy dark tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing
The nose is very sweet and the hazelnut is up front, but there's a nice balance to it as well. I'm picking up on aromas of roasted hazelnut, vanilla creme, sweet bourbon, toasted oak, milk chocolate, black cherry, light brown sugar, toffee, and a touch of walnut
It loses that balance a bit in taste unfortunately, leaning sweeter though it's still enjoyable. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting sweet vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, hazelnut creme, brown sugar, molasses, and light bourbon. The swallow brings notes of roasted hazelnut, burnt caramel, sweet bourbon, molasses, toasted oak, milk chocolate, vanilla, and light brown sugar
A medium full body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes dry and sweet, but the roast takes it over to keep it from getting too sweet
Well it's not amazing, but worth a try. Certainly doesn't drink like 13.4% so that's something
