Can pour- clear dark amber with off white head leaving frosty lacing and a ring of bubbles. Brewed for their 10th anniversary celebration. This was my favorite of theirs when they first opened and hasn't been on tap for years. Nose is citrus and pine with a bit of old leather and earthiness. Taste follows with a hint of alcohol creep. Claimed 168 IBU's -maybe ,maybe not. Lingering astringency on the slightly dry finish. Brings back memories of some kooky fun late nights.

Call it a bourbon barrel old ale, or a bourbon barrel barleywine, it all makes no difference to me, but it does impart what this beer is all about, for the most part.
Pours a dark amber color, thin off white head 1/6". Oh yeah, this was poured at the source in Sacramento. Like when you need your dealer to come through with that sack game. Aroma was old leather books, dusty library, distinctily not bourbon, old bottle, old air, old heir to the throne. A little bit of caramel, toffee and booziness throughout the mouth feel. Definitely a sipper but a worthy sipper. Its not real bitter like an American barleywine, it comes off more English, but then there is a citrus vibe that is more than you'd expect in an English; so there is a little bit of the hybrid thing going on here.
Not getting a lot of distinct barrel character, its more like the area they left a barrel in if that makes sense.

Poured a dark caramel, murky color with 1-to-2 fingers of off-white head. Excellent spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass. Above average retention on the top. (Sight - 4.25)
Smelled soapy pine, Citra, tangerine, orange rind, toffee, caramel and floral. (Smell - 3.75)
Taste follows the nose, maybe less hoppy. Also toffee, caramel, roasty nuts, soapy pine, bitter tangerine rind, floral, earthy rye and booziness. (Taste - 3.50)
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Boozy finish. (Feel - 3.50)
Just average and I probably overrated this a tad. (Overall - 3.50)
