Mr. Stout is unapologetically robust, rich and dark. He's best at mean mugging, tough thug-ing and providing intense roasted chocolate malt flavors.

Canned 5/19/2019: (3.5 years ago)
Appearance: Pours a nearly completely black, deep and dark color with a strong dark tan head. SRM of 23-24.
Aroma: Strong aromas of chocolate upfront that quickly evolve into a dark molasses and dark fruit aroma. There's dark cherries, licorice, dark vanilla and chocolate notes. (4.25)
Flavor: Strong and dark flavors of chocolate upfront with some coffee roast. This quickly evolves into a dark fruit flavor with molasses and licorice to clean off any roast bitterness. There's more dark cherry sweetness and black licorice to clean off any bitterness. Now it's leaning sweet before a smokey and meaty bitter dryness to clean it off the palate. Finishes with dark fruit sweetness balanced by airy and meaty roast. (4.50)
Feel: Heavier-bodied, moderate carbonation. Finishes with dark and meaty roast combating the dark fruit and maltiness.
Overall: Bought this one a couple (no a few) years ago from an unassuming brewery. Unintentionally let it age a bit. Great dark fruit, black licorice, and meaty flavors evolve among the chocolate and coffee roast. Drinks extremely nicely and wonderfully with the bit of age. (Rating: 4.35)

Mr. Stout pours a black color, with a small, tan lacing head. Big rich aroma, roasted malts, sweet chocolate, and black licorice. Flavor is big and bold, bitter, yet sweet, huge roasted smokey malt flavors, and big black licorice. Great feel. Overall, fantastic no frills stout, love the huge flavors and the black licorice.

Wow, I think I'm drinking a different beer than some others. I like this beer. Upon pouring and viewing it reminds me a lot of Expedition. Thick pour with a darker brown (and less purple than Expedition) with a small but dense very dark head. Good looking. Also the feel is similar to Expedition as well. Nice soft and heavy feel, with a soft smoothness going down.
I thought the taste was similar too, but when I did a side by side Expedition was definitely more fruity. Mr. Stout is a roast forward drink with the fruit very much in the background. The roast is not heavy or overdone. In fact it's done quite well. Not burnt or excessive. Just a fine roast with some coffee and chocolate. Almost a milk chocolate quality. Makes me wonder about some milk sugar being in here. All in all this makes a nice drink. Alcohol is not hidden (hard to be at 11%, which is what the can states) but not over done either. No rose or flower. Just adding a touch of thinness and complexity.
I think this is nicely done. I've enjoyed two cans and I expect I'll enjoy the next two as well

Poured from a 12 oz. CAN into a stout glass.
This one pours nicely, with a good two-finger foamy tan head and good lacing, especially for the ABV. Pours thick and viscous. An inviting beginning...
The aromas are...unsettling. No roasted malt; no chocolate; no char; no espresso. A mixture of dark fruit and solvent booze. I'm a little nervous to take a sip.
So, the flavor follows the nose in spades. Solvent booze very forward. Perhaps the most poorly-hidden booze note of any of the style (or any other style) that I've tried. It overwhelms whatever else the brewer is trying to showcase here.
The booze carries over to the mouthfeel resulting in a solid burn that doesn't quit.
This brew looks the part. That's about it. I'm a supporter of the upper-Midwest brewers, and a huge fan of imperial stouts, but sorry guys, this was one of my few drain pours.
RE-REVIEW--OCTOBER 2020
Whenever I have an abnormally low rating, I always roll back through to see if I got a stray bad can.
Poured from a can into a Nonic
Pours inky dark, with limited head and almost no lacing.
Aromas of molasses, dark chocolate, dark fruit, ash, char, and booze.
The flavors follow the nose for the most part. Very sweet on the tip of the tongue. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, and dark fruit in midstream. The finish is ashy and boozy.
More carbonation and ashy finish than expected for the ABV.
Verdict on Round 2--I think I must have gotten a really defective can of this brew the first go-around. It originally registered as:
4.25/2/1/1/1.5
mostly because of overwhelming solvency.
Upon re-review,, I'm posting
4.00/3.5/3.25/3.5/3.5
It's still pretty sweet and boozy, but much better than the first round I tried a couple of years ago. More in line with what I've come to expect from this brewer. Solid.
