So it's not just me!
I thought this IPA had gone bad, and was about to try n return it at my local liquor store. But then i saw the incredibly subtle DATE on the can, dated 08.11.19. I couldn't believe it. I came on here to read what people had to say, and yes. It has the taste of an old and musty, expired IPA -- overwhelmingly caramel with no hint of brightness or complexity in the flavor.
I paid just about $10 for two 16 oz cans in a build-your-own 6-pack. One would have been too much. I'll still drink em, but god damn... I'm adoring the haze craze and the DDH craze and all of it, I really am. But every now and then you just get a stinker like this. IF this brew were like $10 for a 4 pack of 16 oz cans, I wouldn't be too upset.... but it's that pricepoint, on top of the lackluster flavor, that really makes it a stinker.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a tulip.
Pours a very dark for the style cloudy caramel with a two-finger foamy head that lingers for awhile. Not offputing on the "darkness" but kind of weird.
Fairly strong diacetyl-laden malt notes forward. A very sweet initial aroma. Only a hint of citrus zest and pine to show there are hops lurking.
The flavor is also very malt forward. Caramel and biscuit. The hop/bitter balance is there, but muddled. Vague citrus and pine notes. As the brew warms, the citrus sorts itself out into mostly "red grapefruit" and "orange"; and a bit of tropical fruit finally manifests (nectarine/mango? Maybe?) as the brew warms. The booze doesn't bite but definitely hits hard at the back of the palate.
The mouthfeel is at least medium, if not medium-full. Well carbonated, with a boozed-up and drying finish.
Other than the bizarre look, the elements of a decent DIPA are all here, but the execution falls flat. A strong malt backbone, a solid hop counterpoint, and a well-carbonated finish. There is just an overall lack of clarity, and a somewhat unbalanced approach skewed toward the malts. It ends up very muddled and slightly sweet.

A - Light brown / muddy caramel. Never have I seen an IPA that looks as dark as this.
S - Reeks of caramel and crystal malt. The hops come off very citrus-zesty with a bit of pine as opposed to juicy citrus. Even the DDH can't overpower the huge malt presence. The initial whiff of the cracked can is the best thing about this beer, but it's quickly downhill from there.
T - Caramel malt up the wazoo. Lemon, lime and orange zest with a hint of soap. Very astringent and not enjoyable at all. After thinking about it, maybe they used some essential oils to achieve the pungent citrus smell/flavor (but they used way too much or something).
F - Mouthfeel is thick and the carb is appropriate for style.
O - Not good or enjoyable. I understand the whole Stan Lee tribute thing and so they probably decided to do a very old-school ipa as a result, but even then I have no idea what they were going for with this beer. At $20/4pack I will not be revisiting this (and I certainly regret buying it - that's what I get for trying to support MN craft breweries). Last 2 cans will be fed to my sink.
