Notes from 11/1/14

A - Two fingers of dense, off-white head. Clear amber body. Good retention.

S - Sweet malts and very floral. Maybe some honey and band-aid.

T - Bready malt. Heavily floral. Some citrus/resinous bitterness. Sweet finish.

M - Medium carbonation and body.

O - Note too much depth but pretty tasty.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on July 13, 2014.

It pours a very heady orange-amber color with a head that nearly overflows the glass but eventually settles. Also a bit cloudy.

The aroma is more of a caramel and toffee malt sensation with the spruce tips huddling around somewhere in the backfield. I thought they might be more forward than that.

This body is full, chewy, and yeasty. It is also quite easy to drink.

The taste is also very malt forward with only a shadow of spruce, pine, and grass. I found it to be an enjoyable American Ale but it missed the mark a touch as a spruce ale.

Bottle from The Drinkery,
Pours a hazy medium golden color with a huge fluffy off white head that takes forever to dissipate. Smells of light sugary malt with a sharp astringent phenolic aroma that I can't quite place. The flavor is slight sugary malt with with a faint odd bitterness that I assume is spruce tips but its not strong enough to be sure. Phenols and astringency round out the flavor. Medium body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Well at least it doesn't taste like liking a pine tree! If this wasn't brewed with a Belgian yeast strain there is a wild yeast at work here. The phenols are strong with this one, as is the astringency. Swing and a miss.
