Frank Appleton started it all. He dreamt up, then engineered and built B.C.’s very first Craft Brewery, the Horeshoe Bay Brewing Co. On that early system he brewed the very first batch of Craft Beer in B.C. He went on to build numerous other breweries, and along the way he taught many brewers how to become Brewmasters, Sean Hoyne included. He has passed the time-honoured craft of brewing fine beer onto a whole generation, so please, let us all raise a glass to Mr. Frank Appleton, and say Thanks!

Clear copper color. Poured a medium height pale tan head that collapsed down to a patchy skiff after 2 minutes. Medium flow of small bubbles from the bottom of the glass.
Moderate yeast funk smell. Mild malt with a slightly sweet smell. A hint of vegetal and floral hops. A mild horseblanket showed up as it warmed up a bit. The floral hops were also stronger as it warmed up. Swirling the glass kicked up a stronger horseblanket tending towards a mild barnyard. Then it faded back to the original smells.
A bit thin on the malt. The hops and bitters popped out. This is more bitter than a typical ESB. Considering I find most ESBs to be almost devoid of bitters, this is weirdly out of style (although I do like it). Moderate and slightly offensive barnyard flavor as it warmed up. The aftertaste is completely dominated by the bitters. Then the barnyard hangs around for a while.
Moderate tongue tingling. Grew to a coarse foam, just barely bypassing a creamy stage.
I enjoyed this, but I did not think it was true to style. The bitters were too strong for a typical ESB. (I have never understood what was supposed to be bitter in an ESB.) The barnyard got way too strong and started to dominate the other flavors near the end of the glass.

Serving: 650 ml bottle poured into a small nonic glass.
Appearance: Clear, bright copper with a rolling head of off white foam and nice, chunky lines of lace.
Smell: Rich toasted grains, caramel, and leafy, earthy hops.
Taste: Solid malty body with a good balanced of toasted bread, roasted nuts and salted caramel. Well hopped but leaning Old World with leafy, herbal and earthy notes and crisp bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, clean feel and moderate carbonation.
Overall: Full flavored ESB; plenty of toasty malt character, balanced by a good dose of English hops.

Hoyne Brewing 'Appleton ESB' @ 5.2% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $6
A-pour is gold from the bottle to a clear amber in the glass with a small beige head leaving a spotty lace along the pint
S-second pour brings a stronger smell of hops
T-nice & hoppy , mellow dry-bitterness
MF-ok carbonation , medium body (almost full), dryness lingers on the palate
Ov-nice beer , ok ESB
