Hiraeth, a Welsh word that loosely translates to "an intense longing for one's homeland", spent nearly a year in red wine barrels, and was brewed with locally grown sorghum & oat malt from Deer Creek Malthouse. The earthy sorghum undertones lead the way to fruit notes of pineapple and pear, before finishing with a lemony, peppery, dry, tartness. This saison is complex and very unique, and is definitely not one to be missed!

Poured from a tall bottle into a Dogfish head tulip. 2016 vintage
L: Lightly hazed golden pour. Thin fizzy white head leaves modest lacing.
S: Grains, lemon citrus, and spice. Musty wood.
T.F: Semi-sweet/tart. An odd grain taste (the sorghum?) with strong oak/barrel. Some vinous notes but not overpowering... mixed with lemon, tea, and peppercorn. Funky/musty... pear and fruit. A lot of odd flavors that don't necessarily mix all that well. Zesty carbonation... dry at the finish.
O: This is an odd saison. I don't love it... but I don't hate it, but I'm not sure that the flavors mesh as well as they could. I'm glad I tried it... but not my favorite Free Will offering.

Pours a clear liquid gold color with a finger of bright white head. It leaves solid lacing.
There's a light tartness, even lighter apple cider character, dry musty yeast, slight soap and strong oak in the nose. The Brett and barrel definitely make themselves known.
It has a wonderful, full mouthfeel. Medium to heavy bodied for the style, a bit syrupy, with lively carbonation.
The taste, however, isn't to my preference. After noticing the feel, a nice sweetness and tartness present themselves. But they're followed quickly by a harsh woody, musty, almost mushroomy backend and semi-dry aftertaste. As much as I love the rest of the beer, that knocks it down a lot for me.
I've had a lot of excellent beers from Free Will, but this isn't one I'm likely to return to. Fans of big oak and big must might like it better.

L. Slightly hazy orange-copper with a frothy head that reduces to small patches in a minute.
S. Under-ripe pineapple, tart pear, lightly sweet, tart cherry, raspberry.
T. Delicious. Tart berries, apples, pear, lots of lemony flavor in the middle and in the aftertaste. Finishes dry, peppery, and slightly bitter.
F. Between medium and full bodied, just enough carbonation, and super smooth.
O. I am far from experienced with saisons so take this with that in mind, but I thought this was absolutely delicious. I'm pretty sure I didn't even describe it right, but I loved it. Cheers!
