Collaboration with Great Divide Brewing Company

Imperial India Pale Ale with Citra, Amarillo and Cryo Amarillo hops.

In honor of one of the most elusive of all beasts, the Yeticorn, we've brewed an Imperial IPA with the friends of the Yeti, Great Divide out of the fine state of Colorado. The cryo hop addition really makes this beer pop. Over at Great Divide, they're brewing a more sessionable version of the collabo! We're long-time fans of Great Divide, so it was a serious pleasure to brew a beer with them. Hope ya dig. Keep an eye out for those Yeticorns.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a one pint can on September 28, 2019. Imperial IPA brewed with Citra, Amarillo and cryo Amarillo hops. Beware the Yeticorn.

CAN: 16 fl oz pull-tab.

"Imperial India Pale Ale with Citra, Amarillo, and Cryo Amarillo hops." 8.5% ABV.

Hop resin/hop oils. Floral hop flavour. Citrus. Pale malt.

Amarillo and Citra are two of my favourite hop varietals (Amarillo being my favourite)...this doesn't showcase either to the extent found in the best expressions of the style. Kern River's Citra and Mikkeller's Single Hop Amarillo are both better beers hands-down and showcase the hop varietals better. All the cryo hop gimmickry doesn't elevate it above tried and true classics that use the same varietals to better effect.

There's a weird unwelcome bubblegum flavour running rampant through this.

Balanced and enjoyable, but the $5+ per can pricing will prevent me from picking it up again. One expects better from Pipeworks, but this is about par for the course from Great Divide.

Found this at the Argonaut on Colfax, near downtown Denver. Two great brewing companies, so I figured they probably could make a pretty tasty IIPA.

L: Pours with a strangely textured hazy honey-yellow body. It actually looks like it should be transparent, but you can’t see much more than vague shapes through it. Persistent eggshell white head, thick lacing. Looks great.

S: Smells pretty good too. I get plenty of stone fruit, including white peach, mirabelle plum, and apricot, followed by notes of Braeburn apple, loroco, honeysuckle, and mead. Caramel and honey are there from start to finish, giving the hop notes a sweet canvas to decorate.

T: I would hope for more bitterness on the palate to cut the intensely sweet malt base, but it is a fascinating flavor profile, including the honey, stone fruits, apples, flowers, and a little bit of cooked onion on the end. Not great, but good. And interesting.

F: Pretty smooth and light bodied for an imperial IPA. Would like some more dryness, and a crisp hoppy finish wouldn’t hurt.

O: Definitely not a bad beer, but worth the price point? Ehh...
