Rye Ale with smoked malt, brown sugar, black pepper, coriander seed, red pepper, and mustard seed
Official Collaboration with Manny's Cafeteria & Delicatessen
Yes! This beer is inspired by the pastrami on rye sandwich at Manny's. A little backstory...
We first brewed this beer, Pastrami on Rye, in 2011. It was released in 2012. Now, after many years, this beer is coming out of retirement in the best way possible - as an official collaboration with Chicago legends, Manny's! Unlike other versions of this beer, this time, we used their spice ratio for their pastrami in our beer!
This beer drinks like a complex brown ale, with soft smokey notes, and subtle spice. You might be surprised - it's very drinkable.

Aroma is heavy black pepper and rye/smoked malts. The flavor is rye/smoked malts, fruit/hint of raspberry and a spicy/black pepper/slightly grainy sweet finish.

Pint can. Brown body with light brown head. Light lacing.
Aroma has a light rye and sweet malt with a smokiness.
Taste is malty sweet with a more pronounced smoke flavor. The rye is there along with black pepper and coriander. No sign of the surprising 7.7% ABV.
Mouthfeel is good with solid carbonation. I'd say medium weight.
An interesting beer that drinks like a sweet brown ale.

16 ounce can into a tulip snifter. Canned 11/10/23, had 7/9/24.
Pours a darker ruddy amber color, mostly opaque, with a half inch foamy head and some foamy lacing. Aromas of rye, malt, coriander, some caramel. Smells a little smoky. Flavors of rye, malt, red pepper, coriander, some caramel, light brown sugar. Might be some black pepper hiding under the red pepper, can’t tell. Smooth, a little creamy, a good medium body, well carbonated.
Not bad. Lots of rye. And red pepper, too, which I never really thought about being in pastrami before. The coriander has a presence, but also a different taste. Not as smoky as hoped, and don’t get any mustard seed at all. It was certainly worth a try.

Poured from a 16-ounce can, hazy reddish brown, thin tan head receding quickly. Smells of rich malt and/or brown sugar, mustard seed, black pepper, coriander. Tastes of rich rye malt and/or brown sugar followed immediately by a sharp spike of black pepper, red pepper, mustard seed, alcohol, and/or peppery rye malt character. Hop presence is hard to detect. Finishes dry. Medium-full body with high carbonation. This is an interesting beer and it works for the most of the way. I can't help thinking I would have enjoyed the base style more.

Pours a dark reddish brown, with vigorous foam that dissipates. Smells really like a pastrami on rye, which I think is pretty cool. But taste is dominated by too much pepper, I think (it has both black and red pepper). The aftertaste, as well. There is a nice rye bread taste hidden in there.

got to remember to read the whole label before buying the beer - pipeworks beers are usually on the very good side / this beer had a malty taste the a burning sensation. reading the label black and red pepper , coriander- , took another sip and it was no go . even if i had a pastrami sandwich with it

A - Murky burgundy brown color with dense tan lacing.
S - Oatmeal, light smoke, and mustard on the nose.
T - Light toasted malt with alcohol presence.
M - Big medium body.
O - All due respect to Pipeworks, but this beer is the definition of odd and hard to describe.

16 oz can into a pint glass. Hazy dark mahogany color with a robust tan head. Some faint rye spice and coffee-like bitterness in the aroma. The smokiness comes through in the flavor, along with molasses and spices like coriander. Bitterness borders on unpleasant. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with some slight stickiness to it that coats your tongue. An interesting take on a Rye, I love Pipeworks and Manny's but this formulation might need some tweaking.

Pours with a nice rye color and looks dark from afar. The rye hits the pallet right away. I was left wishing for more smoke in the beer. You can kind of pick up a subtle smoke flavor if you look for it. I didn't really find any of the spices in the beer.

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head.
S: Light to moderate aromas of brown sugar are present in the nose along with hints of spices.
T: The taste has flavors of brown sugar and has hints of spices - coriander seems to stand out in particular.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting brown ale, but seemed like it could have used more in the way of spices. The beer hides its alcohol very well.
