Finally succumbing to the hops, Pipework's Unicorn sheds its redness in an American amber ale with Cryo hops and a look back at the rarely seen red ale.
Its with a toasty, rusty and deep amber pour that Cold Blooded Dryo Blood Of The Unicorn quickly rises with off white and ivory froth. As a perfumy scent of toast, nuttiness, caramel and peppery citrus. As its dry maltiness collects on the early palate, those sweeter tones of toast, pecan and caramel bounces off the tongue.
Bubbly and drying, the middle palate shows a rise of orange peel and grapefruit in a nearly classic American hop taste. Perhaps toasted about its edges, the citrus peels quickly develop into a peppery and nearly rye-like bite with a phenolic sense of vinyl before a resinous late palate of bitterness and husk.
Medium bodied, drying and racing toward refreshment, the beer nearly nails it with a dry malt backbone and a crisper finish, but that pesky synthetic plastic taste proves way too distracting to pull this unicorn from the red.

A new Pipeworks beer appears in 16 oz. cans. I pounce. I consume. Now.
The pour is dark enough red to draw copyright infringement from brown, with a fluffy cloud for a head. Nose doesn’t bring much; rusty malts.
Cold Blooded Cryo Blood of the Unicorn IS a unicorm: the rare Pipeworks beer that makes me go “meh”. Tastes rusty, with bready, grainy malts & light caramel. The hops brings earthiness, touch of bitterness & pine. Not something I’d want 16 ounces of. Ooops.

Pours bronze amber with moderate carbonation and a four finger head. Aroma is difficult to discern but I detect pine, buttery caramel and hops. Taste is not as carbonated as thought and resembles caramel and pine. Quite unusual but nothing really stands out as noteworthy, though it is drinkable.
