Country Boy Brewing - Double Barrel Shotgun Wedding. 11.2% ABV. 3oz sample pour in mini mug.

Look: Dark reddish maroon body, with quite a bit of dark head.

Smell: Pretty similar to the regular Shotgun Wedding; lots of sweet vanilla and brown sugar, but now with a strong presence of bourbon.

Feel: Medium feel, with more body than the base beer itself.

Taste: Just as good as the aromas. Rich vanilla, brown sugar, caramel. with a nice backing of bourbon, without being overpowering.

Overall: Had at the Firkin Fest 2016 in Ashland, KY. This was the first beer I had down here, and I'm glad I was lucky enough to try it since it was gone in 20 minutes. It would be hard to improve the regular Shotgun Wedding, but this seems to do it.

I had this on draft as a 8 ounce pour and found this to be quite interesting. Many times you will find a beer tastes different from year to year or even bottle to bottle but this actually was different sip to sip. It started with huge chocolate fudge and vanilla flavor. Slowly it presented more bourbon until the last drink was like drinking a shot of KY's finest. Through the middle I got some barrel, oak, chocolate, vanilla sweetness and appearances of the base beer. This was a lot of fun and showed no alcohol despite the nearly 12%.

Unveiling their first ever brewery-release edition, the classic flavor of the "Boys" are alive and well with a devilishly rich malt backbone and a bourbon barrel wrap. It just so happens with as the common vanilla and chocolate notes of the standard "Shotgun Wedding" steer this crazy-ass ship.

Extreme cola-dark brown, the beer is a hair off of black, showing its tawny coffee stain in its extreme margins. Decadently rich to the nose, its dainty espresso creme plays strongly of bourbon caramels and oak, woven with vanilla and cream and sprinkled with cocoa and fresh ground coffee. Slathering across the palate, early sweetness is of simple syrup, caramel, toffee, brown sugar and coconut.

Creeping across the middle, the caramel, vanilla and marshmallow cream captures a taste of cream soda, but with a stubborn coffee and cocoa weave. With the nutty oak complements, notes of cashew, weathered wood and cherrywood booze rise and gives the taste another plateau of complexity that's not seen coming.

Full, lush and velvety smooth, the beer's texture nestles lazily on the tongue, saturating the tastebuds with its supple carbonation and its deeply seeping booze. Nearly tawny from the tannins and oak, its drying sensation is assisted with high bourbon alcohol, acidic char and burnish wood hops. Its a showcase beer that shows that these "Country Boys" can run with the big ones!

While Shotgun Wedding, one of the staples of the Country Boy lineup, is almost always available, Double Barrel Shotgun Wedding was an early release in the Brewery's history, and has not reappeared in a long while.

Until now.

Aged 11 months in bourbon barrels, DBSW returned to the board to coincide with the Brewery's first-ever limited edition barreled bottle release, which sold out Black Friday 2014, the day of release.

There's a lot of bourbon, but it is balanced against a solid cocoa, along with the vanilla of the base beer.

It's a bit hot now, but for those who didn't drink both of their bottles already, some cellaring will produce happy returns.
