Light ruby coloured body that looks thin. But like, healthy thin, not emaciated thin. Almost like cranberry juice. Little white head that lazily wanders off leaving just some stray bubbles and ring of fluff around the collar.
The nose surprises me. Not in a bad way, just in a 'not what I'd expected' way. It's... fruitier? Than I had imagined? I can't quite pin down what fruit even, exactly. I'd anticipated tart citrus and bramble, but this is much richer, almost with some melon? Or tropical? But no, not really either of those, either. It's enticing, whatever it is.
Taste blossoms with a rich depth I likewise hadn't expected. I was again anticipating pretty harsh acidic citrus with some bramble berry thrown in, but this is really really interesting and incredibly enjoyable. Rich depth of almost brown sugar -area toastiness/depth of flavour with a rich nectar-like ribbon that I can trace back to the blackberries. This bruised-fruit 'sweetness' (with scare quotes) belies the true wild character sitting just underneath. It swells and builds and sneaks up on you a bit, but the crescendo hits before the finish... peaking with a tart note just before receding to allow the rich berry to take full control again and lead through the finish. Still some tartness to said long drawn out finish, but it's not the blistering lemon I was expecting. In fact I'd be hard pressed to pick lemon as the specific acidity/tartness without the label. With that aid, however, I can find it, and it's much more the myer lemon sweet fruitiness than traditional lemon acidity. I'm really really enjoying this.
As I work through the glass, particularly trying to identify that dark/rich character I mention above, it almost reminds me of like a dark rye toast with honey, but dialed down a bit. Really compelling.
