not at all the kind of beer i know and love these guys for, a pina colada candy sour, seems kind of gimmicky for urban family, perhaps their first i have seen in a can, and done in collaboration with henouse, thanks to my boy for saving me a can to share on my visit. this is a weird one, because i kind of want to hate it but i cant, its like something from stillwater or prairie or something that sounds so dumb on paper but then actually is delicious. this definitely has natural coconut character, but in a candied sort of concentration start to finish in both aroma and flavor, even if the beer isnt necessarily sugary to me, its off dry, but its not diabetic. the pineapple is subtle compared to the coconut, and i also get lime, lemongrass, and lemon notes in this. the lactic souring is pretty clean, no real funk or anything interesting on the ferment, which is disappointing for these guys, but clearly they are going for something more mass appeal, trendy, modern, whatever with this one. as a berliner sort of base, i think it works, clean and simple on the grain side, just a base beer really for these kinds of flavor additions, nothing subtle about it, but not too acidic overall, so fairly drinkable if you like the flavor saturation. coming from someone else this would be pretty cool, but i know urban family to be capable of so much more, in a higher order of styles in my opinion, and i hope this sort of thing does not become a trend for them. that said, with the name and the art and stuff maybe its more of a spoof than a sign of things to come. pretty tasty still, but lets hope thats the case...
