Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a lightly hazy, medium golden orange with a big, five finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of candi malt with wisps of grain, Belgian yeast, pear, cinnamon, clove and mystery spices. Flavor is grainy malt, Belgian saison yeast, mixed mystery citrus and apple juice, clove and spices. Spicy, fruity finish. Medium bodied with light to medium creaminess. This is a unicorn beer for me. It does not fit a quad profile (although the malt depth and brewing may fit that style); it is drier and spicier, almost like it was a tripel that tried to be a quadruple. Lots of spices and fruits that are impossible to parse out. I'm also getting farmhouse yeast notes, something I've never detected in a quad before. That being said, it is entertaining to drink, flavorful and after getting over expectations, pretty darn enjoyable. I think I get the musical cultural reference, but still still don't quite get why for this ale. I'm getting old, I guess. Urban Family is not afraid to push the envelope and often, like here, it's not what I expect, but still fun to drink. Looks great.
