Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark malt, red wine, woody oak, vanilla, dark dried fruit and a little oxidation. Flavor is dry caramel malt, Port, dried plums and dates, woody oak and tannins in the finish. Medium bodied with light to medium creaminess. An interesting take on the barelywine style. The base is probably a little more English than American, but the fruit flavors from the Port are lighter and brighter than the English style. I'm not generally a fan of wine flavors in my beer, but have enjoyed some stouts and barleywines aged in Port barrels and that's true here too. The Port character is more clear than I expected and its hard to parse out the dark fruit flavors that might be from the barrel from the malt flavors. Noticeably woody, but the base flavors support the oak wood well. Provided in 12 oz. cans, which is perfect due to its big ABV, which is well covered. Nicely done.
