My 2800th Review
750ml Bottle
Caged/Corked
Double Black Series
Bottled On: 06.24.15
Poured into a Westy 12 chalice a very nice dark slightly cloudy golden amber color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy one-finger off-white head, which leaves a big island in the middle of the glass and some nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is very nice hoppy, with a very nice malt note, with some nice oakyness. The taste is very nice, hoppy, malty, with the nice dryness of the oak, slight citrus. Medium body, the ABV is hidden very well, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, a very nice brew, quite different DIPA for sure. Recommed!

750 ml bottle into a snifter.
Pours a hazy, medium amber with a one finger head, some soapy lacing. Nice looking. Smell is of oak, yeast, resiny hops, citrus as it warms, light malt, some caramel, hint of pepper. Taste brings more resiny hops and much more citrus than the nose. Less oak, but still a good amount. Also, malt, caramel, some vanilla. Solid bitterness from start to finish. Smooth, well carbonated, taste lingers on the tongue.
Very enjoyable, the base beer is really good and the new oak barrels add a lot of character. Definitely worth a purchase.

Pours a beautiful copper color with rocky dense white head. Not alot of carbonation left in the beer after the pour. The nose is light but had hints of barrel and malt. Really nice smell. The head is still there a few minutes after the pour. The taste is mostly barrel. It only becomes apparent that there is other than barrel when the bitter backend shows up. Based on what everyone else has to say I might have got a abnormal bottle. This only tastes of barrel. There is no balance to it at all.

Darn golden color, mostly clear. Big thick white head, with good retention and lacing. Nice aroma of grapefruit and caramel. The favor had a lot of sweet caramel and oak up front, with grapefruit and vanilla as well. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and slick. Overall, pretty good beer.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark bronze amber with a half finger white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma dominated by fresh oak and vanilla, with light citrus hops and tropical fruit around the edges. Flavor is mild caramel malt, citrus hops, assertive woody oak and barrel vanilla. Finish allows both the hops and malt to become dominant, revealing citrus rind bitterness and a nice background caramel sweetness. Medium bodied with a hint of creaminess, good mouth feel. I was not expecting much from the new barrel aged IPAs being developed by a lot of breweries (it almost seems counter intuitive), but have to say I've enjoyed almost all of them. The hops are not a bright and herbal as in a freshly hopped ale, but barreling does add some nice flavor notes to large IPAs. That is true with Fanboy. The hops are not fresh tasting, but have a nice enough citrusy flavor and a good residual bitterness and the barrel notes are up front at first, but there is a good flavor progression as the hops and malt reveal themselves. The oak is not subtle here and may be too strong an influence for those who are not big oak flavor fans. I am one, and really liked this. I can't help but compare this to Oak Arrogant Bastard, which has much more interesting hopping, but that is not a barreled ale. I liked this one almost as much. Recommend a try for oaked ale fans.

Look: Hazy copper color. Two inches of fluffy off white head with great retention. Light pretty lacing. Very very light carbonation.
Smell: Pretty boozy but the grapefruit and pine does a decent job of covering it on the nose. Some oak and vanilla.
Taste: Lots of oak and vanilla up front. Lemon citrus bitterness on the finish. A little roasty toffee malt.
Feel: Medium bodied. A little thin for my taste. Oaky dry finish.
Overall: Pretty well balanced for a DIPA though not extremely complex. This is quite good but not great. I wish this had a bit more body to it. I'd honestly lose my crap if this beer was a bit creamy. Certainly worth a try if your like me and you obsessively just grab any bomber you haven't seen or tried yet. Certainly not a drain pour.
