When a herd of Deerhammer barrels appear in your unit you take the shot and fill em with Barleywine! Barrel Rack is English-inspired featuring a heavy base of Maris Otter and boiled for over 3 hours. Aged on a blend of Rye, Single Malt, Smoked Corn, and Bourbon barrels from our friends in BV.

Pouring deep amber with a tan head and intentional low carbonation, Barrel Rack has aromas of caramel, fig newton, and oak. With sweet smokiness, toffee, and just enough whiskey heat, this beer is one to fawn over.

Pours a dark amber/light brown color with just over a finger of a dense, tan colored head. Nice retention to the head for a 12.5% beer and for the fact the brewery says they purposely dialed back the carbonation.

Aroma showcases dark fruit and sweet malt as you'd expect for the style. Fig, some raisin, dates, caramel, good amount of molasses, brown sugar, slight nuttiness. Barrel brings obvious notes of whiskey and charred oak.

Taste is a nice melding of the base beer and barrel. Fig newton, dried dates, slight prune, molasses, toffee, brown sugar, slight nuttiness, biscuit, charred oak, whiskey, slight vanillin, earthiness. There's some whiskey heat, but it seems the 10 months age has smoothed this out just a touch based on earlier reviews.

High medium body. Slightly dense, oily, slick.

This is a solid BA English Barleywine. The barrel character is quite nice and a good complement to the base beer.

Minor head even with a vigorous pour. This recedes to fine rim bubbles quickly. The liquid is deep, darker amber/light brown. There appears to be a very light haze.

Strong sweet aroma of molasses and brown sugar. I detect an unusual smell of tree bark (paper birch?) and alcohol in the background.

Sweet and boozy like all well made Barleywines, this beer has a toffee like flavor, slightly smoky. Lots of alcohol. Rich bodied, almost oily. There's an element of dried dates here as well. Surprisingly higher carbonation than expected given the style and the lack of bubbles in the pour. Sugary finish with a strong warming feeling in the swallow. Decent length in the aftertaste. No bitter counterbalance. Overall, this is an all-malt beverage with a strong kick and a chewy mouthfeel.

A rather boring looking flat brown pour with barely a hint of foam. Smells sweet and boozy. The taste is sweet with toffee, figs, dates, whiskey and a hint of wood. A thin and warming feel. It's legit and worth your while if passing through Poncha Springs.

Dark amber body, clear; sparse carbonation; initially thick head that dissipates to a wispy covering over the beer. Big roasted grain and rich caramel smell; earthy woodiness. Moderate sweetness cut with a bold whiskey note; caramel; raisins and figs; low hop bitterness. Heavy body; syrupy; alcohol heat and sharpness.

A pretty straightforward barrel-aged barleywine. I would wager that six to 12 months of age might smooth this puppy out a bit.
