Supposed to be a blend of the Red Ale and Black IPA. This doesn't seem to improve either, in my estimation. sort of a wintergreen, chewing gum taste mixed with the malt. Some sweetness but mostly a whole lo of bitter. The hops are quite dank-- wet leaves and bitter herbs.
Plenty of body. Tastes like grape jelly with bitter herb tea. This is such a soup of unpleasant vegetable tastes. Quite attractive, however, with the jet black color and nice off-white head. Spritzy in the mouth with an odd aroma of candy and the comost pile. Bought this somewhere in San Diego.

Poured a finger of tan head on a fairly black colored body.
The aroma is roasted malt, cut pinewood and lemon.
The taste is disjointed. It has a bold pine bitterness up front, then it swings between caramel sweet and lemons. All thrust, no vector.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
Aside from the taste this is a great beer.

A bottled blend of the 1881 and Capt.
Black color, fairly lighter edges. Light brown head, not quite a finger. Aroma had faint chocolate undertones, with some caramel maltiness, mild grassy/herbal hop notes. Mildly bitter finish with a grassy and floral initial hop note, caramel and nutty malts, faintly sugary, light roasted chocolate notes in between. Creamy medium body with a solid carbonation level and texture.
I'm goi to venture this is a fresh/recent release, and as such, it kinda works. The ABA part shines the most and kinda makes me want to try it instead.
