September 26th, 2013 - Hell's Belge looks Luke mud water, a dark brown soup with swirls of lighter brown sediment, but the smell is clearly sweet. Caramelized root vegetables like carrots give off a Maillard reaction heavy scent, but the palate is thin and watered down. There's notes of roasted sweet potatoes in there, and maybe some wheat bread dolloped with light molasses against a slight alcoholic buzz, but the taste isn't as engaging as the aroma promised.

Dark amber in the glass. Tart and strong. Flavors of fermented fruit. Tastes like it has a shot of liquor in it, like fruit brandy. Some peach nectar and nectarine flavors. Nicely carbonated without over spritzifying.

Full bodied and very malty in a nice way. Not too much of the Belgian flavors. Roasted malt and fruit cocktail make an interesting combination, and pretty well sums it up. A tasty, strong sipping brew that exhibits the classic jolly weirdness of this brewery.

On tap at the brewpub off Mira Mesa Drive just north of the Miramar industrial corridor.
