The most remarkable intensity of licorice greets the first gulp, along with a huge dark malty flavor. Brewer states this is brewed with Caramunich and Caravienne malts and clocks in at 90 IBU. That seems unlikely, but there is a lot of hop flavor. The bitterness grows as you sip, but it's a pleasant sideshow. The color is a dark red brown in the chalice with a nice foam and a pleasant creamy spritz in the mouth.
If you want to call this a black IPA, it's fine with me. I like that this brewer is not a slave to category. This reminds me of the big malty Lagunitas beers that also have a large dose of hops. From the swing-top growler bought at the brewery tap.
