Invasive 5; Lesser Celandine is the next installation in our series based around invasive species... specifically invasives that are affecting our ecosystem here in Pennsylvania. This iteration is constructed atop a fluffy mountain of malted oats. Intensely hopped and dry hopped singularly with sticky drippy Nelson Sauvin hand selected by Jean in New Zeland last harvest. Man... this hop and this yeast just sing together. Absolutely THE most polarizing Nelson Sauvin presence in any of our beers in recent memory. Notes of over ripe mango, orange marmalade, creamy tropical smoothie, late harvest Sauv Blanc and wildflower honey.

Can dated 10/12/18. Poured into a mug, loook is OJ with an inch white head leaving lacing behind. Smell is tropical fruit, dank, white wine. Taste matches the smell and it’s delightful. Feel is medium and juicy coating the mouth in joy. Overall delicious and to me deserves every bit of 4.5 for a almost 2 month old can. Cheers

Truly outstanding beer, especially if you’re a fan of Nelson Sauvin hops.

6-7 week old can poured into a Teku. Pours a turbid, orange-gold body with a massive off-white head of compact bubbles. Head drops fairly quickly but leaves big dollops of soapy film. With each sip and swirl the head rebuilds and thickens, driven by strong carbonation. Very juicy looking and highly attractive.

Huge citrus, floral, and white wine aromas wafting out of the glass. Can’t imagine how big this must have been fresh! Peach, white grape, cracker, lemongrass, green apple, green tea, maybe a little mango, an herbal note, and a subtle dankness that bleeds into musky grape skin. Lovely.

Taste brings you exactly what you’re hoping for: giant doses of sweet green grapes, lots of grassiness, a wonderful tropical fruit salad, plus specific notes of tangerine, guava, lime zest, green tea, and white bread. The white Zinfandel characteristics are wonderful, though I admittedly like a little sweetness in both my beers and wines. A little grapefruit pith on the back end, but the main takeaway is the perfect degree of sweet fruitiness. I’m getting a little greenness in both the nose and tongue but don’t find it astringent at all, more fruity and herbal. Absolutely wonderful, and I wish so badly that my DC buddy had shipped me more than one can.

In typical oated IPA form there’s an interesting dichotomy where the beer feels simultaneously medium-thin and incredibly soft and velvety. Very well carbonated, which obviously adds to the latter. Just the right amount of coating on the tongue without being sticky.

Phenomenal beer. I’m a big fan of Nelson Sauvin, and this beer highlights everything I love about it. Very well done.

Thank you Steve for these cans.

Pint can dated 10/12/2018 - poured into a tulip at 44F.

Pours a turbid white grapefruit juice color, with a noticeable greenish hue to it. Less than a finger of frothy bone white head settles to a film and soapy collar. Body is turbid, but actually clear enough that you can see the carbonation streaming up. It is opaque, but it has jus a little bit of outer translucency to it. Digging that green cast.

Nose is huge passionfruit and cilantro. I had a a can a couple weeks ago when it was just days old and the cilantro on the nose was MASSIVE. Much more restrained here, but you definitely still get it. Some key lime zest, white wine, green apple, pear, orange juice, and a whole variety of fruits tucked in there. faint blueberry and cranberry too. Has a little bit of that "green" smell. A lot going on here. Depth and layers.

Palate brings that cilantro note right up to the top. Passion fruit following closely behind. These hops are so exotic, I honestly can't even identify the notes in them. You know those Bolthouse and Odwalla fruit juice smoothie drinks? It tastes like one of those that has begun to ferment. It reminds me of a cross between the greens one, and the red berries one. A whole bouquet of herbaceous and leafy green flavors, and a lot of fresh sweet fruit action. All with a pinch of fresh cilantro and a splash of passion fruit. There's a very strong sweetness in here, that although coming from malt, honestly walks more in line with the fruity flavors, furthing giving the feel of some kind of legitimate smoothie. Very restrained to almost no bitterness shows up on the finish, but never really builds, just working the dry it out, and give a sense of closure. Aftertaste of green herbaceousness.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium, with some good weight to it, and an above average carbonation that makes this incredibly crisp and drinkable. Not a super creamy Julius, but it does have a small bit of heft. The bubbles really work to lift it up, and give it spritz and life. Semi-dry at the end. Would still be a great summer day treat.

Overall, this shocked me at first. This is hopped only with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It's a brilliant idea and it works beautifully. I see where they get the name "Sauvin". Big notes of passion fruit, pear, green apple - Very NZ SavBlanc. With its green herbaceous flavors, its huge array of fruity impressions, strong lively bubbles, opening sweetness, and that freaky cilantro flair, this beer is in a league of its own. A must try, and a delightful offering from Tired Hands. Would absolutely drink again, and am very glad I have more.

Tired Hands oat-based beers are generally lighter in color and milder in taste than barley based IPAs. This single hop (Nelson Sauvin) double IPA comes at you in waves. Remarkable complexity for a single hop brew.

Of the 5 Invasive DIPAs, I think #5 is second only to #1.

Can from release on 10/17/18. Poured into tulip.
Look is dense orange pulpy murkiness with the usual tired hands IPA extra fluffy white head. Nose is a wonderful melding of Nelson with the “expressive” yeast they use for the invasive series, they seem to complement each other amazingly with Nelson melon and white grape and very light hop dankness up front with general tropical fruit, pineapple, and citrus yeasty notes, like smelling a Nelson hop bag and a tropical fruit salad at the same time. Taste is more of the tropical fruit up front with the melon and white grape building through the middle into a delicious semi dry finish with low bitterness and lingering Nelson hoppiness. Mouthfeel is medium and “fluffy” as TH says. Overall this is an awesome IIPA in my humble opinion. I’m a big fan of Nelson anyway and the yeast they use here takes it even another level I didn’t think was there. Great stuff.
