cool to add coffee to a black ipa, not always a flavor combination we get to see and experience, so points for creativity and innovation here. its shiny near black in color, with an average off white head on it, but lovely lacing as it sips. aroma here is burnt black barley, brewed black coffee, and piney hops with plenty of bitterness. this is robust in all facets, hopped like crazy, its both oily and bitter, sort of west coast style, lots of the hops all the way through too, not just in the finish. the black grain is intense here, bitter in its own right, and without some of the caramel malt sweetness often used to temper it. coffee is there all the way as well, fresh brewed, a little hint of smoke and dark chocolate to it, fresh lit cigarette, in a good way. intense earthy beer overall with quite a nice alcohol boost to it as well, it sounds like too much on paper, a clash of titans of flavor, but the truth is that it comes together beautifully. my first beer from these guys is a real winner. i would be proud if i brewed this...
