473 ml can served cool into a pint glass.

Appearance - Mildly hazy, light golden color with multiple fingers of head. Good staying power and some spidery lacing left behind.

Smell - Fake candied grapefruit and pomegranate, but still kind of works for me

Taste - Same as the nose, a little bitter in the aftertaste, but plenty of sweetness throughout. Reminds me of Heavy Seas tropicannon, but not as well done.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, dry finish decently expressive carbonation. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either.

Overall - Decent enough IPA, if you like the artificially candied type sweetness you'll love it. For the rest of us, it's pretty middle of the road, maybe even lower.

473 mL can from Superstore; no discernible packaging date that I can see. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a little foggy but still fairly clear; its body is a pale golden-yellow colour, crowned with an inch of puffy, foamy white head that gradually recedes in about five minutes or so. It leaves behind a decent-sized swath of even lace as it's reduced to a creamy collar and filmy cap - looks quite nice in the glass. Pomegranate, pink grapefruit and raspberry lemonade on the nose, which is somewhat tart and sweet; maybe a touch of grainy malts too, but the fruits overshadow everything else.

Things were looking up at first, but I felt a wave of disappointment wash over me with the initial sip, as there's an unusual astringently bitter flavour that I am not at all keen on. Other than that, I'm mostly getting pink grapefruit juiciness at the forefront, with pomegranate joining in by mid-sip, then a pithy, floral bitterness (and that astringency) before a fruity aftertaste of grapefruit and pomegranate. Medium in body, with moderately lively carbonation that feels prickly on the palate, frothing up a tad for a smooth, almost fluffy texture that does feel nice on the tongue. My taste buds adapted to the weird off-flavour over the course of the glass, but even without that, this is just a mediocre fruited IPA.

Final Grade: 3.42, a B-. There are few moments more saddening for a beer reviewer than gazing upon a great-looking glass of beer with an enticing aroma... and then having that first sip just fall completely flat on its face. I don't know if it's the pomegranate flavour, the hops, the grapefruit, or some combination of all three, but Hops & Robbers Pomegranate Smash just did not come together for me *at all*. I actually had a similarly lackluster experience with their Pineapple IPA, whereas their regular Grapefruit IPA tastes just fine to me. This is juuust weird and/or tolerable enough to be worth trying once, assuming you're already curious.
