473 mL can from Superstore; no canning date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a clear golden yellow colour, producing nearly an inch of soapy, foamy, gorgeous white head that settles off within five minutes or so. It leaves behind a generous coat of thick lacing, in addition to a frothy collar and patchy cap - it's a very attractive-looking beer, but I fear that it's all downhill from here. The aroma is basically pure passion fruit, and it's so intense that I have no real reason to believe that it isn't a flavouring (vs. actual juice, or even just a concentrate) - too bad they couldn't be bothered to list the ingredients, so I'll never know. Hints of citrus and grape too, but it's all shoved aside in favour of the passion fruit.
It tastes mostly of passion fruit from start to finish - this is interrupted only by the occasional hint of grainy malt and some pithy, floral bitterness near the tail end of the sip. It's kind of astringent, too, with an almost chemical-like feel - this is a feature I noticed in their pineapple and pomegranate-grapefruit IPAs as well, though I didn't find it quite as offensive/intense here as I did in those other beers. Even still, it's enough to turn me off the whole experience. Light-medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that weakly agitates the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth mouthfeel. I'll finish my glass, but it'll likely be my last one.
Final Grade: 3.36, a B-. The marketing spiel on the side of the can describes Hops & Robbers Crimes of Passionfruit as an NEIPA, which is a stretch IMO. It doesn't look, smell, or taste like one at all - sure, it's kind of juicy, but that seems to be derived from the flavouring, which is used heavy-handedly and mostly serves to obscure whatever hop flavours might've otherwise shone through. I guess it's better than their pineapple IPA (which I disliked), and roughly on par with their pom-grapefruit IPA (which I also disliked, but slightly less). Not recommended, unless you are absolutely crazy for passion fruit.
