32oz growler from Barrel and Barley (Woodstock, GA). Filled 4/26/14. Served in a stemless Burnt Hickory globe.

Pours hazy ruby hued chestnut with a finger and a half ecrue head. A thin layer remains and leaves some fairly respectable sheets of lace.

Orangey citrus aromas with sweet glaze, soft vanilla, peach and an almost leather quality. Earthy and sweet.

Taste is a bold and flavorful blend of the spicy rye malts, sweet barrel notes and citrus fruity hops. Rye, vanilla, oranges, pine, oak, caramel, mild peaches, a whisper of whiskey, an almost pumpernickle note, some pepper and slight alcohol heat. Dances between bitter, sweet and spicy. Deceptively easy to drink for it's 12.5% abv and absolutely delicious.

Rather oily, somewhat slick medium full body with moderately soft carbonation. The dryish but lingering finish is a bittersweet medley of orange peel, rye and vanilla.

A rye wine, eh? Barrel aged and heavily hopped? Like no other beer I've had before but if this is a template for a new style hybrid I'm completely on board! I hope to see Burnt Hickory brew this again as at least an anual/occasional release.

Growler poured into BHB stemless wine glass. I was told this beer was a rye wine aged in rye whiskey barrels and then blended with fresh, dry hopped version of the base before packaging.

A - Deep red with an off-white head with surprising staying power and lacing considering the 12.5% ABV

S - Rye spice and caramel, with earthy hop notes of pine, grass. Slight alcohol.

T - Big spicy, earthy rye notes. Oaky, and sweet vanilla notes from the rye whiskey barrels create a level of depth to the beer, but don't overwhelm. Slight dissipating bitterness. Very little alcohol presence, but I can feel it on my breath and in my head. Probably shouldn't have tried to take this down before dinner.

M - Heavy bodied, somewhere between sticky and chewy, yet the rye is drying and dissipating. A really interesting combo.

O - Another really great brew from Burnt Hickory. This one is unlike anything I've ever had, and being that I'm a huge fan of everything Rye, this was right in my wheelhouse. I'm a big fan and hop this one makes their annual special release calendar. While it's fantastic I'd love to see what a few years in a cellar does to this beer.
