Appearance: Dispensed an opaque, dark brown, near black body with a lasting, medium toned tan head.

Smell: A great, gracious bourbon nose that nicely compliments the Big Shanty qualities with notes of semi-sweet chocolate, well-kilned grains, and spice.

Taste: Sweetish dark malts, with tastes of chocolate, light roasted grains, and dark bread. Residual sugars heightened by the brown sugar and light vanilla elements from the barrel aging. Dark fruitiness of raisins, prunes. Very minor hop character, bitterness. Drying, malty, still fairly bourbony finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-light carbonation.

Overall: For the past several years, the beer scene has been sprouting substandard barrel-aged garbage like fungus on a four-week-old tuna sandwich. Not the case with BABS! A real treat, I'll say.

Big Shanty is almost black in appearance. It has a nose of chocolate and cinnamon. Incredibly unique, I truly think that only the guys at Burnt Hickory could produce something this great! It has little hop characteristics but its very CREAMY!

Deep brown in color with about a fingers worth of head that disappears.

Nose is vanilla and graham cracker, a bit of bourbon, and a bit of oak.

Taste is predominantly bourbon and oak, minor vanilla and graham.

Mouthful is medium and a touch watery but smooth. Carbonation is very low. Finish is semi sweet.

This is an instance of a bourbon barrel doing more harm than good. The regular big shanty is real nice and 99% of the time adding something real nice to a bourbon barrel makes something awesome; not here though. The BB really muddles this. Try it next to the non bb.
