11oz pour into a Night Shift tulip glass. Served on tap at the Night Shift Mainer Weisse release party, 10/16/2013. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a brilliant coppery amber, slightly hazy under normal lighting but managing to sparkle from within when held up against a light source. Initial head is an off-white frothy 1.5 fingers or so, rapidly subsiding to a loose, sudsy collar. Lacing is minimal. Visible and highly active carbonation.

Nose is understated and honestly fairly basic--some barnyard funk, touches of bright citrus, a bit of clove-y spice. Good, but nothing special.

In the mouth, however, this beer comes alive. The front of the palate is greeted by a punchy burst of tart, lemony citrus, before more subtle funk takes over around the middle of the palate. Some of the same melon notes as appear in the base beer show themselves here, as well as appley flavors reminiscent of a tart, dry cider and a subtle earthiness. A pronounced yeasty spiciness emerges towards the back of the palate and melds well with a lingering clove-y funk character, presumably from the brettanomyces.

The mouthfeel is arguably the best part of this beer--on the lighter end of medium-bodied, with a prickly, persistent effervescence keeping the beer feeling lively throughout.

On the whole, color me impressed. While I liked the basic Honeydew beer well enough, the addition of brettanomyces and a period of cask-conditioning has accorded this beer an intriguing clove and apple cider component that pleasantly mingles with and enhances the base beer's melon, peppercorn, and citrus notes. Very glad to have gotten to try this.
