This is a portion of Viva Habanera batch #4 that was aged in bourbon barrels for 2 months.
Dark ruby red grapefruit color. Head quickly fizzles to a collar and then nothing at all. I recall retention problems with original Viva Habanera on tap so I don't think it's due to the barrel aging so much as inherent in the recipe. My wife's glass looks a little better but foam likes her more anyway.
Smells like Hawaiian Punch with an interesting agave bourbon twist. Like a citrusy sour mash bourbon doing the salsa.
Plenty of heat but appreciable and never searing. The bourbon contribution is mild, I'm mainly getting more Hawaiian Punch. There's a rye pop in the middle which I love. Lighter body, I'm assuming that agave nectar thins a beer similar to honey?
I've previously stated that everything is better with bourbon and I stand by that statement. Not much better in this case though. Walks the fine line between complex and messy.
