Canned on 7/1/20; consumed on 7/25/20
Pours an opaque dark honey gold body topped with 2 fingers of fluffy, white foam; good head retention yields a thin cap, an expansive, frothy collar, and gobs of soapy lacing holding to the glass.
Aroma bursts with gritty hop resin accented with white grape skins dominating upfront; earthy pineapple offers suggestions of tropical sweetness as waxy herbs take hold; overripe lychee features sporadically on the close.
Taste shows a mushy concoction of dank lemon peel and white grape must for a lightly dank, earthy opening; wilted parsley comes across the mid-palate before delicate hints of tropical rinds present an imminent fruity texture to the backdrop as hints of fresh dirt and mossy undertones take over into the finish.
Mouthfeel offers a semi-slick medium body in soft contrast to a steady, prickly moderate carbonation; semi-creamy developments evolve into a more juicy texture over time before phasing into a mild bittering fading into the finish and past the swallow; effortless transitions on the palate leave a consistently engaging impression.
The earthier side of Monkish haze shows a familiar consistency, trending in line structurally with their other NEIPAs while presenting a rawer, almost herbal, hoppy edge; in parts one-dimensional, and yet as fluidly composed as any top-tier example of the style.
