Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: New England Double / Imperial IPA
Glass: Firestone 16-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
Price: $22.00 for a 4-pack
From: Monkish Brewing Company in Torrance, Calif.
Purchased: Aug. 14, 2020
Consumed: Aug. 15, 2020
Misc.: Canned on Aug. 13, 2020
Was lucky enough to pick up a 4-pack of this and another one, ordering from San Diego in the morning and picking up in the late-afternoon. I’ll be up this way the next two weeks, so going to try and keep staying lucky and get whatever I can from them. This one was labeled on their website as, “Double Dry Hopped (DDH) Double IPA w/ Vic Secret, Simcoe, & Galaxy.” I regretted buying this after the fact because I really don’t like Vic Secret, but I felt like I had to get a 4-pack because it was Monkish. I got another 4-pack of Monk Magic Dynasty when that became available a few minutes later, but I wouldn’t have got this if I would have known there would be another one available. Anyway, here we go.
Poured a golden murky color with 3-to-4 fingers of rocky white head. Plenty of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. World-class spiderweb foamy lacing. Almost perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled Vic Secret first for hops (but not that bad to me!), followed by Galaxy and lesser Simcoe. Also passion fruit, pineapple, papaya, peach, bitter pine, black pepper, viney berry and melon. A little better and danker from the can. (Smell - 4.00)
Tasted big Vic Secret, followed by Galaxy and Simcoe. Also passion fruit, papaya, pineapple, peach, black pepper, bitter pine, viney berry, melon, herbal and wet grass. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.25)
I have to say this was much better than I thought it would be with the Vic Secret. Outstanding overall. (Overall - 4.00)

Turbid straw yellow with a lumpy foam head of moderate height leaving a few spongy bubbles of lace on the glass.
Sharply spicy sticky icky comes with an acidic hop burn that's just shy of aspirin, creating a cottonmouth effect, but also leaving room here or there for some tropical fruits.
Chewwwwwwwy.

Sweet candied pineapple, tropical hoppy, hint of citrus, and hint of resiny dank nose on this one! Nice nose initially! Taste follows with a pineapple and grapefruit citrus bitter swallow at first. But then, an earthy and resinous vibe starts to show up on the backend and lingers on the back of the throat...it actually starts to dominate the palate and interferes with enjoying the overall taste and the decent depth and mouthfeel. This is still drinkable, but a rare miss for the mighty Monkish.
