Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: New England Double / Imperial IPA
Glass: Firestone 16-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
Price: $22.00 for a 4-pack
From: Monkish Brewing in Torrance, Calif.
Purchased: Oct. 16, 2020
Consumed: Oct. 16, 2020
Misc.: Canned on Oct. 6, 2020; Split 4-pack with Sonny
Was lucky enough to pick up some Monkish once again while house sitting in Manhattan Beach. This one and another became available about 45 minutes after the initial drop, so I was lucky to find this one available. Online description called for a “Double Dry Hopped (DDH) Double IPA with Citra, Southern Cross, and Galaxy hops.” That’s an interesting hop trio. I’m a big fan of Citra, Galaxy has really grown on me and Southern Cross is hit and miss, depending on what it’s brewed with.
Poured a pale hazy color with five fingers of rocky white head. Could see some bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass. Almost perfect layered foamy lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled all three mentioned hops - Citra, Southern Cross and Galaxy - very early and all about balanced. Also grapefruit, dank pine, lemon zest, passionfruit, papaya, lime, apricot and grass. Even better out of the can with the three hops all still coming through. (Smell - 4.00)
Tasted just as good as the nose, maybe a little bit better. Got Galaxy, Southern Cross, dank pine, grapefruit, lemon zest, passionfruit, peach, papaya, grass, vegetal, apricot, Citra and lime. (Taste - 4.25)
Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Longer finish. (Feel - 4.25)
Might have overrated this slightly, but it grew on me as it went down. Excellent. (Overall - 4.25)

Nope. No sir. Uh uh. Not feeling it. This one is like when Edward G. Robinson plays a non-gangster role - next! Now, it’s not horrible (like Edward as a farmer or something), but when you have seen him as Little Cesar, why want anything else? And with Monkish, when I have tasted them at their best, why go off and make this average swill? Just keep sending out those bangers! Stop experimenting like Edison.
Ayyyyyyyyye!

Opaque yellow body with white foam.
Lightly floral.
Notably peppery. Some of the OJ I expect from Citra & Galaxy on the front of my tongue, not really on the finish.
Sharp and clean and surprisingly dry. Might have opened too early as it's harsh and sorta chalky.
