Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with one finger of a tan colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is strongest of a sweet milk chocolate and lighter roasted malt smell. Along with the sweet chocolate comes some other smells of vanilla and a decent showing of caramel. Mixed with these smells comes some notes of coffee and a little bit of smoke.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter milk chocolate flavor mixed with a little bit of a caramel and vanilla sweetness. The vanilla, milk, and caramel intensify a bit as the flavor advances, bringing on a bit more sweetness to the brew overall. Right from the front, there is a decent level of roastiness to the brew, which remains rather constant throughout. A hint of coffee and earth come to the flavor at the end of the taste, leaving one with a sweeter, but rather smooth and balanced chocolate porter flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that was rather average to on the slightly lower side. The slightly lower carbonation was great for the more roasty and chocolate flavors of the brew with the average body doing a decent job overall for the flavors. Fairly good overall.
Overall – A fairly nice chocolate porter with a decently sweet, but not obnoxiously so, milk chocolate flavor. For a 5.6 % abv porter this one delivers a good level of taste.
