Poured from growler into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a super deep amber brown color with a two finger head of just off white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell as well as some other darker coffee smells. Along with the darker aromas are some light sweeter smells with some caramel and molasses as well as a little bit of a cola and dark fruit smell of raisin and fig.
Taste – The taste begins with a strong roasted malt flavor mixed with a light level of a woody taste. These flavors are accompanied by some flavors of a light caramel nature and some light dark fruit flavors of plum and raisin as well. The fruit flavors and caramel fade some as the taste advances, all while the roasted flavors and the woody tastes intensify on the tongue. A very light coffee flavor as well as a bit of an earthy flavor develop more toward the end of the taste, leaving one with a roasty and somewhat drier and dark flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for the 6.4 % abv. of the brew with it containing a carbonation level that is rather average to a little bit lighter. For the style the thinner body is not the greatest, but the more moderate carbonation is spot on for the drier and roasty flavors of the beer. Overall the feel is pretty nice.
Overall – With only a 6.4 % abv. and drier flavor, this is not the standard malty and robust old ale that I was originally expecting, but overall the flavors were quite nice, roasty, and dry and made for a rather decent drinker.
