Ishikawa Goemon was a 16th century Japanese Robin Hood figure who stole gold from the rich and gave to the peasants. He failed to assassinate a brutal warlord and was sentenced to boil alive in a large cauldron. We boil this beer in our large cauldron in his honor.

a honey ginger braggot style, one of the more ambitious beers we encounterd touring around the breweries in the bozeman area. really pretty well done here, they had a lot of cool beers working here at outlaw. this pours clear deep golden, a shade darker than that maybe, with a short white head anda pungent aroma of fresh ginger. less sweet than anticipated in nose and taste, the honey seems to be largely fermented down, just a bit of sweetness remains, more of a floral sort of residue, light in body because of all the honey. the ginger is spicy and fresh, zesty but not hot necessarily, just as close to the line as you could come without going over and making this too intense, at least for my palate. the subtle remaining honey flavor works well with the ginger, and the lighter body makes this pleny easy drinking. i was surprised how good this was, its one thing to make a good pale ale (which they most certainly do here!), but to pull off a beer like this so well is really impressive. cool for a brewery to have an easy drinking golden beer offerering thats so interesting too, very uncommon and much appreciated!

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a nice deep golden color with a small head of white foam. The head fades very fast leaving just a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is rather potent of a ginger smell mixed with a little bit of a honey sweetness. Along with these aromas comes some lighter hints of a graininess as well as a bit of a sour lemon smell, which overall, give a bit of a more beer-ginger tea hybrid like aroma.
Taste – The taste is much drier then I was anticipating with it beginning with a rather dry cracker taste with just a hint of a honey sweetness. As the taste advances further, the sweet fades even more, all while some lemon and a rather decent sum of a ginger come to the tongue. The lemon and ginger grow stronger and stronger as the taste moves onto the end and with a little bit of a more grainy and grassy flavor that develop at the end, one is left with a somewhat dry ginger tea like flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is thin and a bit watery all while the carbonation is rather average. The average carbonation suits the dryness of the brew rather nicely all while the thinner body makes it more easy drinking and matches the ginger tea nature of the brew rather well. Overall, for the tastes, the feel was rather well done.
Overall – While much drier and thinner then I was expecting, it did deliver on the ginger and lemon without being overly potent and keeping a rather easy drinking feel. While not one I would go back to again and again, it was a rather nice one to try.
