Served on tap in a point glass
Appearance – The beer is served mahogany brown color with a one finger head of tan foam. The head fades rather rapidly, leaving just a trace level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is strongest of a caramel and roasted bready smell. Along with these smells comes some bit of a toffee smell as well as a little bit of grain.
Taste – Upfront the taste is strongest of a roasted bready taste with some flavors of caramel and a moderate level of toffee. As the taste advances the caramel grows in strength all while the toffee fades. Other flavors of a slightly earthy hop flavor come to the tongue, but these remain relatively light throughout the flavor. More and more grainy flavors come to the tongue more toward the end of the taste all while a decent bit of a scotch flavor develops as well, leaving one with a rather nice flavorful sweetened and roasted, lightly scotchened flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for a scotch, but rather average for the 5.1 % abv. of the brew with it containing a carbonation level that is rather average to a little bit lighter. Overall it was an OK feel, but a bit of a thicker and fuller body certainly would have enhanced the scotch and rich flavor of sweetness and malt that a scotch brew traditionally has.
Overall – For the low abv. of only 5.1%, this actually packs a quite potent flavor punch. The only things holding it back is its slightly thin body. Other than that however, this is a quite nice, drinkable, and flavorful brew overall.
