Served on tap
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown, nearly pitch black color with a tiny head of cream colored foam. The head fades very fast leaving just a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is massive of a cinnamon smell mixed with a decent showing of a roasty and caramel taste. Other spice flavors of a clove and cardamom mix with some sweeter vanilla and a bit of a molasses sweetness. With a touch of Belgian yeast mixed into the aroma, a nice dark and cinnamon spiced aroma is produced overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a rather roasty malt flavor with a moderate level of sweetness of caramel, chocolate and some molasses. The spice tastes are a bit lighter upfront, but get quite a bit stronger as the taste advances. Tons of cinnamon develops throughout the taste with some other spice flavors of clove and coriander developing throughout. With some yeasty tastes coming about more toward the middle of the taste, and with a little bit of a vanilla and a hint of a more grainy and grassy nature coming at the very end, one is left with a dark and heavily cinnamon spiced taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the moderate side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the very light side. For the mix of Belgium with dark and spice the more moderate body does rather nice, but a little bit of higher carbonation may have helped accentuate the yeast and spice in light of the darker roasty tastes a little bit better.
Overall – Quite cinnamony with a decent Belgium dark ale taste. A decent brew overall, but not quite as balanced and crisp as I traditionally like for a Belgium style ale.
