On tap at the Eccentric Cafe on 7/21/12

A) Medium dark and ruddy. There is a decently thick ring of retention.

S) The aroma is roasted dark malt and toasted rye.

T/M) Hmm, this seems like a thin, fizzy reason to dump some rye malt into a dark beer. A bit earthy, too.

D) This isn't good; very rough around the edges.

A - A very dark beer, pretty much black. Off-white head had decent retention.

S - Smell is a touch muted. Rye and spice (pepper) seem to be the focus. Some roasted malts and a bit of coffee as well.

T - I warmed up to this a little bit as it went (it might have been the horrible other beers I was having, so it was good by comparison), rye is a good focus (well it is a rye beer) and the spice adds some to it. A lot of roasted malt makes this a pretty simple beer.

M - Little creamy with medium carbonation.

O - Easy enough to drink, it wasn't bad, and I wouldn't complain if I had to drink it again. Not great by any means, but solid.

a black pour with little on the nose... there was a slight head that left some lacing on the glass. as it warmed, it opened up a bit.. nothing crazy...some roasted malt...bit of burnt coffee maybe... not a bad beer, but nothing I'd go crazy for.. was definitely worth the try though!

On tap at the Eccentric Cafe.

Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black. Given the name, I guess I'll just say it was black. Creamy light tan head floats atop for awhile before eventually settling down. The nose offers a bit of peppery spice plus some earthiness. Roasted malt and hints of coffee there as well. The taste is pretty plan--mostly just some roasted malt with a bit of zestiness there. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation levels and a slightly-dry finish. Drinks fairly well. I'd have this again if offered, but generally there are better things on tap at the EC that I'd prefer.
