Oak-Conditioned German Pils

Following a brief primary fermentation in stainless, Trailbreaker is laid to rest in a horizontal oak foeder for extended conditioning. This treatment heightens the flavor profile, allowing notes of crisp mineral water, mild lemon, straw, noble hops, and mild tannic oak to shine through beautifully. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Tried blind side-by-side regular Trail.

L — Same straw body but practically no head despite the effervescence. Interesting to see the impact of the oak aging there
S — Much more expressive aromas. Lemon, wheat, oak chips, light fruitiness, dough
T — Banana, white oak, noticeably more hop character
F — Crisp, effervescent, and decently refreshing although there's a bit of a lingering noble hop aftertaste
O — It's no Poetica, but this is a good example of Tree House's continued interest in "the craft" despite their other interest of making profits

From a 12oz can dated Summer 2024. A lovely German Pilsner. Crisp and thirst-quenching.

Drank from a can purchased at Tree House Brewing Company, Charlton, MA
Served in a Willi Becher

Impressive appearance. The beer poured a nearly clear, pale straw yellow that turned slightly hazy when some of the yeast from the can sneaked into the glass. A fluffy, bright white, two-finger tall plume rose above the body and slowly dropped to a thick, clingy, lasting collar. Streaky, spotty lacing coated the sides of the glass and stuck around until the beer was finished.

The nose was remarkably crisp and bright. Uber powdery and dry. Quite grainy too. Slightly biscuity. White pepper was also noticeable. Touch of lemon as well. The lemon became much more pronounced as the beer sat.

The flavor profile followed the nose. Big crisp, powdery and dry yeasty presence. Noble hops appeared up front and intensified as the beer moved along the palate. Bright lemon notes were quite prominent as well. More lingering herbal and earthy, noble hop bitterness on the back end and in the finish.

Fantastic fluffy, lighter bodied mouthfeel. Crisp and sprightly on the palate. The liquid contained a larger bubbled, fairly aggressive effervescence that was reminiscent of a Champagne.

Tree House might be best known for their hazy IPAs and pastry stouts, but their lager program has been getting progressively better with time. This beer is light and crushable but still quite interesting. All in all, a very impressive attempt at the style.

12 oz can poured into a tulip pint glass. Pours a slightly cloudy straw yellow with a small head that fades to a ring of bubbles. Aroma and flavor feature bready malt, dry crackers, noble hops (grassy, floral), a touch of lemon, and light bitterness. Light, moderately carbonated mouthfeel, but not thin. I'm not picking up any oak, but I would believe that the oak conditioning added something positive to this beer. Delicious and thirst-quenching, complex and very flavorful for the style.

Agitated two fingers of loose foam, bright white, evaporates quickly, no real lacing present. Very mild gauziness to the liquid, yellow gold color, a few beads but most of the bubbles look dispersed. Grainy nose, raw oatmeal, quinine, almost metallic at times, lemon pith, maybe more floral as it warms, not especially fruity, some apple or peach, not discerning a clear impact from the oak conditioning. Medium-bodied, possesses a solid carbonated churn which increases palate presence. Here the oak adds a creaminess rather than toastiness, not sure what kind of char the wood had nor what type of oak. More grains and breadier here. Very lemony. The metallic tang there but not as pronounced as the nose. Solid apricot, peach, pear fruit. Overall, the oak adds texture and one might question the merit of messing with the mouth feel of a classic beer style. But that's why breweries experiment. (Canned 7/13/21)
