From a 16oz can, date-stamped ‘Autumn 2023.’ Served in a tulip glass.
Pours a thick and oily appearing mahogany-black with a scant finger of fizzy, chocolate coloured head. Suds stand up for a few seconds, leaving a narrow collar and a barely rousable film of oily, super-slippery near-lacing.
Nose is warm, rich and roasty. Aroma of chocolate cake and coffee - I was expecting pumpkin spice but was pleasantly disappointed!
Taste is in line with the nose - sugary, chocolate cake-like, black coffee with molasses. The ‘pumpkin spice’ is delightfully understated to the point where I’m struggling to tease it out - my first impressions are of powdered ginger, if that’s even a pumpkin spice, and of chile peppers, which is definitely not. I think the heat I’m picking up must be from cinnamon, but it’s very restrained.
Feel is dense, unctuous, oily. Heavy bodied with gentle carbonation. Consistency is something like sugar water but not quite outright syrupy.
Overall, a pleasant surprise. Way too sweet and heavy for my tastes - but that’s every Double Shot iteration ever, and probably the only reason I buy them is so I can complain about them - but I was expecting the pumpkin spice to be overplayed and, fact is, it was so understated, so restrained that I might not have realized that’s even what we were doing had it not been printed on the can.
