House Lager is an American Light Lager made entirely with flaked corn and malt from our friends at Thrall Family Malt in north-central Connecticut. This style demands flawless brewing execution-there are no fruits or adjuncts to hide behind-and it is a proud example of our brewing attunement at Tree House. You can taste the difference from familiar industrial homogeneity. Light, characterful, and easy to drink, House Lager carries notes of grain, sweet corn, and hints of lemon propelled by a crispy body.

The nose and particularly the taste had a burpy sulphuric note to it that brought the score down a bit. That said, for a 4.3% light lager, it’s still a winner.

16 oz can poured into a tulip pint glass. Pours a clear light straw yellow with a foamy head that subsides to a thin layer of bubbles. Not much lacing. Aroma and flavor feature light corn/malt along with hoppy lemon/grassy notes. Light, spritzy mouthfeel but not thin. Solid.

16oz can poured into a pint glass.
A: Dull golden color with perfect clarity. Large-bubbled white head instantly rises to a high four fingers, but settles into a thin cap after about five minutes. It leaves behind a lot of webby lacing.
S: Big top note of sweet corn. Hay. Soft, bready grain notes. Clean. Hops are light and floral with a bit of lemon grass and soft herbal spice . A touch steely. Perhaps a hint of nutty yeast.
T: Opens with a lot of corny sweetness and soft, bready barley. Very clean. Hint of yeast. Floral hops with a brush of lemon grass and a spritz of lemon. They go gritty and spicy/green for an instant, but there's no challenging bitterness and the balance stays where it should. Drying finish sees the corn trail off and a soft lime leaf sort of flavor linger for a bit.
M: Light bodied, but a couple notches more full and weighty than the average AAL. Creamy flaked corn texture. Soft overall. Ample carbonation has a bit of a stiff, prickling scrub but also falls short of the average AAL.
O: Pretty solid stuff, for what it is. It's an interesting challenge for Tree House to take on, and I think they almost pulled it off. It was cleanly fermented and well-executed in that regard. However, it's a hair more big-boned than perhaps it should be and felt a hair under-carbed too. You kinda do want that carbonic bite here. It was nice to give it a try just to see what they can do, but I wouldn't continue to pay a premium for it with brands like Narragansett around and priced aggressively. It's also high time for us beer geeks to publicly admit that the Miller family of AALs is actually really on-point, and kind of a style benchmark.

Tree House Brewing Co. "House Lager"
16 fl. oz. can coded "LEPRECHAUN NIGHTCAP 03/02/22 10:00:55" and sampled on 05/17/22
$13.20/4-pk at the brewery on 05/12/22
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a lightly hazy straw gold colored body beneath a full head of bright white foam. Before looking at the label I could smell that it was an adjunct beer, and sure enough it's brewed with corn. The aroma is sweetish, grassy, and lightly grainy with only background hops. The taste follows suit but with more hops. They're floral, citrusy, grassy, and subtly peppery and spicy. The malt is fuller than I'd expect of an "American Light Lager", as are the hops - together they work out well but overall it's too malty and not dry enough in the finish. They could have used more bitterness to balance it out but then the same problem would remain, it'd just be more malty, more hoppy, and more bitter than it really should be for an American light lager. It's light-medium in body and gently crisp. The head held up well at first but then dropped and after that only tidbits of lacing were left behind. I'd give it extra points for the head retention except that they're knocked back down by the fact that it's hazy. I hate to say it because it's Treehouse and they even write on the label "This style demands flawless brewing execution" and "is a proud example of our brewing attunement" but this is not that good.
