Poured from a can into a tree house tulip glass
Appearance – The beer pours an almost clear medium golden color with a large head of puffy white foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, fading slowly and leaving tons of streaky and foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is rather complex. There is a bit of bready and cracker malt, but the bulk aroma is a mix of citrus smells tied in with some other sweet and savory smells. The citrus is quite heavy on a lemon and lime front, but does show a bit of grapefruit and tangerine as well. The citrus is paired with a honeydew melon smell along with note of fresh hops with a grassy and floral smell, and just a touch of herbal hop.
Taste – the taste begins with a crisp cracker malt mixed with a bit of graininess and a some of the lemon and lime citrus that was in the nose. The lemon and lime aren’t nearly as strong as the nose may have suggested, adding just a backdrop flavor. Other flavors of a earthy and floral hop nature are there upfront, with both getting stronger as the taste advances. At the same time the maltiness gets a bit more intense as some doughy notes join in. A touch of lemongrass and pepper join in at the very end combining with the rest to take the taste to its finish.
Mouthfeel – The body is middle of the road in thickness and creaminess as well as more moderate in carbonation level.
Overall – At first, I didn’t really care for this brew, but as I sipped more and more it grew on me. More of a fresh hopped pale ale in my mind (don’t get much Helles here), but overall, rather tasty.
