Perhaps not surprisingly, the beer pours mostly still with little head production, and no retention of what little is produced. Still, it's not an entirely dead beer in the glass, as there's evidence of scattered dark foam atop the thick black body, and large, uneven bubbles around the edge of the glass.
Incredibly rich and potent on the nose. No hint of oxidation. Notes of chocolate, syrup, neutral grain alcohol, toffee, caramel, red grape.
Flavor follows. It's remarkably smooth despite the very high ABV and extensive barrel aging pedigree, although there's certainly some effervescent heat on the second half. Sweet and rich, but not overly so; there's quite a biscuity, crackery, almost bitter flavor on the second half. While the bourbon presence is notable, it doesn't seem to contribute too many specific tasting notes, other than the grainy alcohol note also noted on the nose. Rather, it seems to mostly ride along with the rich malt base, adding some sweetness, and perhaps a tiny touch of sourness, and I suspect overall contributing to the syrupy note.
Tasting notes otherwise match the nose, with very rich chocolate notes (in particular on the front third and into the mid-sip), syrup, a bit of molasses, caramel, cracker, toffee, a bit of espresso. If anything, it's a bit darker and richer in tone, with less sharp fruitiness, and more deep, rich roast - but little, if any, roasty char, leaning much closer to a toasty profile.
Absolutely delectable and phenomenal blend. That said, if you're going to make a highlight out of blending BA stouts from one to five years of aging, in barrels with (at least in theory) excellent pedigrees, I'm a little surprised that the bourbon influence is so subtle, at least in terms of flavor expression. It's very obviously there, and very delicious, but I would expect some more specific, identifiable tasting notes. That's a very, very minor quibble regarding what is an absolutely fantastic blended BA stout.
