Tree of Fellowship is a barleywine ale aged in bourbon barrels that was first conditioned on toasted cacao nibs, followed by a second round of conditioning on pumpkin and autumn spices. The base beer carries pleasant notes of vanilla toffee, caramel, and warming oak imparted from its two year rest in our barrel cellar.

On tap at Tree House Charlton

It’s once again time for my annual day before Thanksgiving trip to Tree House and we’re starting off with a doozy. I can’t say I’ve ever had a Barleywine with pumpkin but if I trust anyone to do it justice it’s Tree House. Let’s dive right in

Pours an opaque dark brown with a finger of creamy dark tan head that fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing

The spices dominate the nose but they’re supported by a solid (and boozy) malty backbone. I’m picking up on aromas of nutmeg, vanilla bean, baked pumpkin, cinnamon, raisin, brown sugar, toasted oak, sweet bourbon, brown bread, and cherry pit

It’s a bit more subdued in taste, leaning more into its stylistic origins while still retaining a nice warming spice. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting brown sugar, molasses, raisin, smooth oak, cocoa powder, bourbon, burnt caramel, cinnamon, pumpkin meat, and light vanilla. The swallow brings notes of cinnamon, earthy bourbon, allspice, baked pumpkin, toasted oak, cacao nib, burnt sugar, vanilla bean, and light raisin

A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes rich and a tad sticky but drinks well below its abv

This one is fun, but it doesn’t even come close to reaching the heights of their Barleywine game. Thankfully they have some Tree Of Life Port for me to take home

Aged for two years in oak barrels. Decent starting head for the style but it ultimately leaves no remnants on the glass. Dark brown color where no light passes through.

Raisiny with cinnamon. Boozy. Some vanilla.

Very rich and syrupy. The lower carbonation enhances this. The flavor is very boozy with an underlying sweeter chocolate flavor. The finish is like a chocolate liqueur, both in taste and warmth. Extraordinary and extreme in equal measure.

L - deep brown with no head
S - Heavy fall slices - cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg -, rich bourbon, oak, toffee, caramel, dark chocolate
T - complex - rich bourbon, oak, toffee, molasses, and caramel up front, followed closely by cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg, with pumpkin and dark chocolate on exhale
F - full bodied with light carbonation. Thick, soft, syrupy
O - Decadent Fall in a glass. This beer captures the darker, slower, shorter days of Fall, while highlighting Fall's comfort in its taste
