I haven't had a new Bunker IPA in a good long while, but they typically do pretty good stuff so I was happy to see one canned within the last month at a local spot in southern NH. This is New Slang, and it's hopped with Mosaic Incognito and Nelson, which sounds like a fun combination. Incognito is a weird new hop process that basically results in "hop concentrate" with 0% vegetative matter and better efficiency of use. Sounds good, in theory... is there a catch? Is this going to give the same Mosaic effect that I'm used to?
The pour here is alright, kind of a typical NEIPA with a hazy, yeasty looking doughy body with an orange-golden complexion gone murky and muddy. The head is composed of some solid white foamy suds that build up to two fingers with a hard-leaning pour, leaving behind a decent bit of lace and solid legs as the head recedes. Some carbonation is visible around the edges of my glass, and some surface coverage is also present. Kind of in the "average but good" realm for this style.
The nose initially had me a bit confused, as it smelled really grainy and unusual, but it quickly came into focus and I started picking up the unique white wine overtones of Nelson. This definitely has an almost-catty, funky, vegetal note to it that is actually intriguing instead of being off-putting, but it's totally close to being something I might not appreciate in a beer of this type. I don't have a lot of experience with Mosaic Incognito, or with Incognito hops in general honestly, but there is a distinct dankness and earthiness in here that speaks to it being pretty well-represented. I get notes of apricot, melon, pine, guava, and passion fruit with slight hints of overripe mango and pomelo flesh in here. It's pretty cool and unique.
The flavor profile here is quite nice, honestly. Nelson really comes out at the front and gives off superb flavors of passion fruit, melon, and white wine with tropical notes that feel oddly seasonally-apropos. It's cold and wintry right now where I am, but this somehow feels right for the season. Perhaps the flavors that aren't specifically-tropical help give it some credence in that realm? Not sure, but this is pretty satisfying stuff.
Feel is hefty for the style and ABV, I will say. It's pretty hop-saturated, too, so it's not exactly the easiest beer to put back. That said, the density does give it a warming and "filling" feel that I appreciate, especially as we continue into Winter in New England. Good stuff, and I'd drink it again.
