I got to try this beer at the Great Lost Bear back in the spring, and just now came across the notes I made that day.

According to Mike at GLB, this beer is similar to Bunker's pale ale, but with twice the hops added to the boil.

The is an opaque beer, brownish copper in color. A small tan head rests on top. After a few sips, all of the foam disappears and only the smallest amount of lacing remains.

Some citrus hop aromas are evident. It isn't overpowering, but certainly stronger than your average pale. The are some hints of pepper mixed in the nose as well.

The beer has a spicy bitterness. I'm picking up on a lot of hop oils. Crystal sugar sweetness lingers (especially in the mouth coat) along with some of the pepper. It tastes a little strong, so if it is actually 6.5% ABV (that's the brewer's estimate) it isn't masked.

The body of this beer is a little heavier than average, but the carbonation is spot on. Lots of tingling sensations from the hop oils give your mouth a workout.

This is the second batch of unfiltered IPA, and while I do like it, it may need some more work. As it is now, it's average, but considering this is a brand new brewery, I can't fault them for bringing out an IPA--everyone else has one! Keeping it unfiltered it an interesting twist, but I've brewed IPA's at home and they've never been this cloudy...but I'm brewing a 5 gallon batch, not on a 1 BBL system, so what do I know? Anyway, I have high hopes for this brewery, but when it comes to small breweries in Portland (Maine Beer Co., Rising Tide), Bunker has some strong competition. Being draft only and having two restaurants that will always carry their beer (owners of the brewery are connected to Local 188 and Sonny's) will keep their beers in demand.
